Big Read Kick-off Event

Saturday, April 24 from 10 am - 3 pm 

Let’s celebrate the 1960s with great music, food, dressing in your best 1960s outfit to win prizes, and of course, FREE BOOKS. Get your copy of The Things They Carried and get ready to join us for a celebration of our Vietnam War Veterans and how this time period has changed how we all live. Listen to the music of the 1960s from Special Guest Steve King and the Dittilies, with opening act Matto. Special Guest Speakers: Representative Cindy Denby, Senator Valde Garcia and Library Director Ceci Marlow will begin at 1:00 pm. Copies of The Things They Carried will be available (while supplies last). Drop-in -Village South Lawn.

Big Read Fundraiser at O’Malley’s Irish Pub & Restaurant - Visit O’Malley’s for a late lunch or dinner and live music after our Kick-off Celebration and a portion of the profits will be donated to support Cromaine Library’s Big Read 2010. Big Read food and drink specials will be served all month long!

Michael Rosenberg: War as They Knew It: Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler and America in a Time of Unrest – Michigan Notable Book Author and Free Press Columnist Michael Rosenberg discusses the culture of the United States from 1969-1978, and how the country was literally at war in Vietnam and figuratively at war with itself. Citizens for Peace present: Using Language as a Peace Builder - An interactive overview of nonviolent communication as described by Marshall B. Rosenberg in Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life. Learn the skills needed to connect with others in a peaceful way as well as increase awareness of the language that blocks effective communication. Registration required -Village.

The Cultural and Historical Significance of the Vietnam War – Professor of History at The University of Michigan, David Smith, discusses the cultural significance of the Vietnam War and the historical accuracy of O’Brien’s novel. Registration required - Village.

 

 

Monday, May 10 at 7:00 pm

The Wednesday Wars author Gary Schmidt –This 2008 Newbery Honor Book author discusses his novel The Wednesday Wars and its place in time during the Vietnam War. Ore Creek students are reading this novel, parents come meet the author! Registration required - Village.


Tuesday, May 11 at 6:00 pm

The Food of Vietnam – Kim Dao Waldis, a co-owner of Da Nang Restaurant in Clawson, speaks about her experiences as a Vietnamese immigrant in Michigan and the wonderful food that is part of her Vietnamese heritage. Quilts of Valor – Quilts are made for injured veterans by Quilts of Valor. Meet member Ann Meredith and find out how you can be a part of this generous and caring group. Drop-in - Hartland Senior Center.

Returning Home presented by VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System – Representatives from VA Ann Arbor will discuss the after-effects of combat, with special guest speakers. Registration required - Hartland Music Hall.


Saturday, May 15 at 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Music of the 1960s: Songs of Protest and Hope – From 1959-1971, popular music gradually transformed itself from teen-oriented dance music into a new art form that made powerful social commentary. Using audio, video, and live performance, Dr. Daniel Jacobson shows the dramatic impact of folk, rock, pop, soul, and psychedelia on perceptions about Vietnam and the civil rights movement. Drop-in - Hartland High School Auditorium.

MIA: My Brothers Story – Sue Scott's brother has been missing since December 30, 1969. Since that time, she has made it her mission to champion the MIA soldiers of the Vietnam War. Hear her brothers story through her words, and where it has taken her for the past 41 years. Registration required - Hartland Music Hall.

Big Read Author Tim O’Brien Visits Hartland – Tim O’Brien comes to Hartland to discuss his novel, the Vietnam War and his life - a truly engaging man, profound speaker and a real storyteller. Registration required - Hartland Music Hall.

Veterans Round Table Discussion – Led by American Legion Commander Doug Kuhn, local veterans of all wars are invited to join Doug for talk, food and bonding. Drop-in - O’Malley’s Irish Pub & Restaurant. Adults only. Sponsored by O’Malley’s Irish Restaurant.

Patriot Guard Visit – The Patriot Guard discuss their support of the military. This group helps families who have lost a loved one to the war when protesters try to interfere with a funeral service, and much more. Registration required - Village.


Tuesday, May 25 at 7:00 pm

Vietnam: How a War Changed Journalism – Michigan State University professor Stephen Lacy discusses how the Vietnam War changed the way that we view war today. Registration required - Village.

 

Thursday, May 27 at 7:00 pm

Documenting History: Our Local Veterans – Hartland High School teacher and Veteran Paul Scheidler discusses the historical significance of documenting the history of our local soldiers from all wars. Registration required - Village.


Monday, May 31 at 11:00 am

Hartland’s 75th Annual Memorial Day Parade – Walk with us in the Memorial Day Parade as we celebrate our veterans and the conclusion of this year’s Big Read! Sign-up begins May 1st at the Village. Donate $5 or more to the Hartland Area Community Council for a button in support of the flyover!

Lego Mania, Big Read Edition – Build a Lego creation at home from the themes Military or Patriotic. No kits allowed. Bring the creation to Cromaine between 9:00 am - 5:00 pm on Friday, April 30. JUDGING will take place at 5:00 pm, no late entries allowed. Come back to the library at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 1 to see who won! For ages 5 - 13. Registration required - Village.


Tuesday, May 11 at 10:00 am

Family Storytime – Learn about Vietnam and the culture, listen to a story and make a craft. For the whole family. Registration required - Village.


Wednesday, May 12 at 10:00 am

What Would You Carry If – What would you take if you had to leave your home quickly and carry everything in your backpack? Hear some stories and make a collage to display at the library. For ages 6 - 10. Registration required - Village.


Wednesday, May 19 at 7:00 pm

What Does a Soldier Carry? – Michigan National Guard, Howell Armory will be here with the equipment that a soldier in Iraq and Afghanistan might carry. For the whole family. Registration required - Village.

What We Brought from Vietnam – Kids learn about Vietnam with crafts and food. For ages 5 - 12. Registration required -Village.

Their Journey: Vietnamese in Michigan – As part of The Great Michigan Read 2009-2010, Cromaine Library hosts this traveling exhibit featuring photos and text about Vietnam, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, refugees coming to Michigan & Bich Minh Nguyen, author of Stealing Buddha’s Dinner. Brought to you by the Michigan Humanities Council. Open to the public Tuesdays & Thursdays in May from 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm – Village Community Room.

 

 

Monday Jam Sessions – Grab your instrument - be it your guitar, flute or your voice, and join other local musicians for a relaxing jam session led by Marianne Murphy from Milford Music. Come to all four sessions! Drop-in, note location for each date:

The Weather Underground –This film tells the story of the Weathermen, the group of 70s radicals who went underground throughout much of the decade to wage a low-level war against the government.


Wednesday, May 19 at 7:00 pm

Regret to Inform –This story of one woman’s journey after her husband was killed in Vietnam is a redemption-filled story that may change the way you think about war.


Wednesday, May 26 at 7:00 pm

Hearts and Minds –This 1974 Academy Award Winner is an unflinching confrontation of the US involvement in Vietnam.
