"The Summer I Turned Pretty" is a tv show adaptation of the best selling series by the same name. I found myself quite enjoying the show, but I think I find my main criticism comes from the lack of depth that the main teenage characters have. While we get to see our characters on the surface, there isn't much more there. The show is built on the relationship that develops over the summer between Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah, but as characters they read kind of one note. Throughout the show, we're constantly told that Belly has become more shallow and concerned about appearances, but her character was never built up well enough in the first place for us to notice these changes taking place. We see little flash backs now and again, but its more about how the characters are interacting rather than showing us who the characters are, what they act like, and what motivates them. The most interesting relationship that takes place is actual between Laurel and Suzanna, the kids' mothers. Their relationship is actually very well built and interesting with some especially fantastic writing during the 4th of July episode. But the show overall is fun and an easy watch and has plenty of good elements to make of for the less positive ones.
"The Summer I Turned Pretty" is available on Amazon Prime.
